Fiordland, New Zealand, combined infrared and visible satellite image. North is at top. Wet vegetation is green, drier areas are pink, water is black, sediment is blue and clouds are white. This area is in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island. The fjords of Fiordland National Park are in the mountainous area on the coast at left. The lowland area at lower right (light green and pink) consists of agricultural fields supplied by rivers. Fjords are deep narrow coastal inlets formed by glacial erosion, and flooded by the sea. The fjords in this area include Doubtful Sound (upper centre). Above and right of Doubtful Sound is Lake Te Anau. At top right is the southern part of Lake Wakatipu. The city of Invercargill (pink) is on the coast at bottom right. Image obtained by the Landsat 7 satellite.
