Otoman Zar-Adusht Hanish (1844-1936), Persian magus. Hanish was said to have been the son of a Russian diplomat in Tehran. Born with a congenital heart defect, he was brought up in a secret Zoroastrian sect in the mountains and taught breathing techniques to control his condition. He travelled to the USA and earned a medical degree in Chicago in 1900. Calling himself a Persian magus (wise man) he founded the Mazdaznan movement to promote his teachings on diet and breathing control, as well as aspects of the Zoroastrian religion. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
