Roger John Tayler (1929-1997), British astrophysicist. Tayler was born in Birmingham and studied mathematics at Cambridge University. From 1954 to 1961 we worked at the Atomic Energy Authority at Harwell, on plasma physics. From 1961 he worked with Fred Hoyle on problems in nuclear astrophysics (the chemical elements produced by the stars), and also on problems in cosmology. In 1967, Tayler became Professor of Astronomy at Sussex University, helping to develop an active research centre. He wrote several popular books on stellar astrophysics, and was Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College, London, from 1969 to 1975. He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1989-1990), and was created OBE in 1990.
