Girl studying a slow worm (Anguis fragilis). The slow worm is not a worm but a legless lizard. It can grow up to 50 centimetres in length. It inhabits meadows, woodland edges and gardens, feeding on slow-moving insects. Like many lizards the slow worm is able to shed its tail as a defence mechanism, although it does not grow back fully.
