Eye drusen, ophthalmoscope image. This eye has a normal optic disc (large white spot) and a normal macula (small red spot). However, there are some tiny white drusen spots seen at upper right of the optic nerve. There are not enough of these drusen to affect the eye's vision or functioning, and it is relatively common for those over 40 to have a few. However, a higher number of larger drusen in the macular is an early sign of age related macular degeneration (ARMD), a condition predominantly found in elderly adults where the clarity of vision is lost as they age.
