Cancellous bone. Light micrograph of a section through healthy human cancellous (spongy) bone revealing trabeculae (pink) and bone marrow (purple). This type of bone tissue is found deep inside bones, below a dense shell of hard compact bone. Cancellous bone consists of a network of hard trabeculae separated by interconnected spaces filled with bone marrow. Bone marrow is a living tissue which manufactures blood cells (dark nuclei). The trabeculae contain osteocytes (dark dots), cells which maintain the bone matrix. Adipocyte fat cells (white ovals) can be seen in the bone marrow. Cancellous bone has an important supportive role. Magnification unknown.
