A young girl, her body lightly smeared with a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs, wears a round white-beaded necklace, called ombwari, a tradition of all Himba people. Her other neck ornament, an eha, is made of leather decorated with metal studs. Her hair is styled in two plaits, which is customary for girls until adolescence. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia.
