Bibi Khanum mosque during reconstruction. Construction started in 1399 by Timur, the mosque was built as Samarkand's main place of worship and dedicated to Timur's favourite wife, Sarai Mulk (Bibi) Khanum, a Mongolian princess of surpassing beauty. 500 stonemasons worked on the 130m x 100 m building. 95 elephants were brought from India to Samarkand to carry building materials.
