Terra Sirenum region, Mars, coloured satellite image. This region, in the southern hemisphere, is heavily cratered. Spectrometer analysis of the rocks show the presence of ancient (3.5 - 3.9 billion year old) chloride and phyllosilicate minerals, which are strongly associated with the presence of water. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on 24th April 2009. The width of this image is roughly one kilometre across.
