Argyre impact basin on Mars, 3-D computer artwork. The Argyre basin, seen here looking east to west, is also known as Argyre Planitia. It measures 1,800 kilometres in diameter and 5 kilometres deep. It is the second largest impact crater on Mars (the biggest is Hellas Planitia). This model was created using 3-D topographical data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) on board the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. Colours represent altitude, with blue the deepest, up to green, yellow and red at the highest point. Surface texture was rendered using Viking spacecraft data. and Viking data.
