Stellar jets from L1157, infrared image. The jets (orange and white) are outflows of radiation and material from a developing star L1157 (green). In visible light, this star and its surrounding regions are completely hidden. The infrared view of L1157 shows the jets, while the disc around the star is the darker area at right-angles to the jets. The colours show the temperature of the jets, from hot (white) to orange (cold). The reddish haze is dust. L1157 is located in the constellation of Cepheus and is around 800 light years from Earth. Such jets are typically a few light years long. This image, published in 2007, was obtained using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) of the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST).
