Robert Estienne (1503-1559), French clasiscal scholar and printer. Estienne was born to a family of printers in Paris and was apperenticed to the profession. On the death of his father in 1526, Estienne took control of the business. Having had a humanist upbringing, he specialised in printing works in Greek and Latin. He printed many editions of grammatical works and text books and the works of classical authors such as Cicero, Julius Caesar and Eusebius. Many editions used the elegant typefaces created by Garamond. In printing his 1551 edition of the Greek New Testament, he was the first to divide the New testament into verses as well as chapters. Three of his sons also went on to become famous printers. This engraving comes from Beze's Les vrais poutraits des hommes illustres printed at Geneva in 1581.
