Pompeii garden (foreground) and Vesuvius (background). Trees and grape vines are being grown in the garden. Pompeii, a Roman city located in the Bay of Naples, Italy, was ruined and buried during an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city was rediscovered and excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today it is a tourist destination visited by millions every year. Despite the destructive power of the volcano, millions live in the surrounding area, cultivating the rich volcanic soils as the Romans did.
