Paul Bartsch (1871-1960), US zoologist. Bartsch was born in Germany and emigrated to the USA as a child in 1880. He studied at the University of Iowa, and then worked at George Washington University, and as a curator at the Smithsonian Institution. He specialised in the study of molluscs and crustaceans. A species of squid was named after him, and he co-authored Fishes and shells of the Pacific world (1945). This photograph dates from between 1905 and 1945. It is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
