Nocturnal, artwork. This instrument, used to tell the time at night, consists of moveable metal discs inscribed with constellations, months, days and hours. To use the instrument the central hole is lined up with the pole star. The moveable arm, or alidade, is aligned with the chosen constellation and the time is read off of the smallest disk.
