Black garden ant eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the compound eye of a black garden ant (Lasius niger). The eye is formed from many separate lenses, called ommatidia. The image formed by the ommatidia, as interpreted by the insect brain is not very sharp, but is especially good at detecting movement.
