Detached retina, artwork. The retina is the light sensitive membrane at the back of the eyeball. If it is damaged, fluid can leak under it and cause part of it to come away from the rear wall of the eye. Symptoms include flashes of light, floaters and loss of part of the visual field. The retina can be reattached surgically, or by using a laser.
