King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) breeding colony at St Andrews Bay, South Georgia. This is the largest king penguin breeding colony on South Georgia. Meltwater from three glaciers (Cook, Heaney and Ross) drains into the bay, providing penguins with cool water with which to regulate their body temperature. The shallow waters of this glacial river are crowded with these birds, who like to stand in the water. This penguin is found in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. It is a social animal, living and breeding in large colonies of thousands of individuals.
