Nave of Jeronimos Monastery, Lisbon, Portugal. This monastery commemorates the voyages of exploration made in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Age of Discovery by Portuguese sailors and navigators. It was built by King Manuel I in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded in around 1450 by Prince Henry the Navigator. This hermitage was where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in prayer before leaving for India in 1497. The carvings on the columns include sea monsters, ropes and corals. The monastery and the nearby Belem Tower form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
