Spinosaurus dinosaur, computer artwork. Spinosaurus lived in what is now northern Africa during the Late Cretaceous period (95-80 million years ago). It was the longest carnivorous dinosaur, reaching a length of up to 16 metres. It also had a long crocodile-like head, and probably fed on fish. The sail on its back might have been used for temperature regulation, or in mating displays.
