South American geological and ethnic artefacts with the first english translation (1819) of Alexander Humboldt's \Personal Narrative of Travels in the Equinoctial Regions of the New Continent during the years 1799-1804\". Humbolt travelled extensively in Latin America, and was perhaps the first person to explore it scientifically. His accounts of the travels won him great esteem. A particular admirer was the young Charles Darwin who read the works before his Beagle voyage and considered them a wonderful template for the activities of a travelling scientific man. Artefacts figured here are an Amazon Indian feathered armband and two fossils (ammonite and nautiloid) from high in the Andes of Ecuador. Numerous South American geographical features and biological species are named after Humboldt."
