Human trophy skull from Sarawak, Borneo, carved with Kayan designs. A puncture wound is visible on the temporal bone here just above the ear. This may be the cause of death rather than a later puncture to the remains, since these trophies were taken during tribal raids. The carved patterns are predominantly floral motifs, though the forehead bears a stylized vulval image (a similar specimen is on display in the Asian Civilization Museum Singapore). The purpose of these traditional carvings is unclear. Recent facsimile skulls often use a deeper contemporary \Aso\" dragon carving style which was not used while headhunting was common practice in Borneo."
