Thyme leaf oil gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of the leaf surface of the herb thyme, Thymus vulgaris, showing an oil gland. Two types of trichomes (projections from the leaf surface) are seen: unbranched multi- cellular hairs which appear as bent structures and cover most of the surface; and glandular trichomes (sphere) which are the source of an aromatic oil. These oil glands give this herb its value in cooking and in aromatherapy. Magnification: x473 at 5x7cm size.
