Unripe seed capsules of the poppy (Papaver sp.) The seed capsule is the remains of the plant after its petals have fallen. The pericarp (capsule wall) hardens and dies as the capsule ripens. Pores appear at the top of the capsule, just below the stigma (yellow). It is through these pores that the mature seeds are released. This process is known as dehiscence.
