Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868), Scottish lawyer and politician. Brougham was educated at Edinburgh University, eventually becoming Lord Chancellor of England (1830-1834). His legal career included the defence of Queen Caroline in 1820, as well as helping to pass the act that abolished slavery in the British Empire. He was a founder member of the University of London. He designed a four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage The Brougham, which bears his name. Politically he contributed to law reform and advocated working- class education.
