Portrait of Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-87), American humanitarian. Dix made a lifetime study of mental illness in the US. She was largely responsible for the acceptance of mental illnesses as defineable diseases, and that they could be responsive to some treatments. Dix also established the first specialist mental hospitals in America.
