Wolcott Gibbs (1822-1908), US chemist. Gibbs graduated from Columbia University, USA in 1841 and qualified as a medical doctor in 1845. He researched inorganic compounds, analytical methods and physiological chemistry. He also worked on the complex compounds of the metal elements cobalt and platinum. Gibbs was Rumford Professor at Harvard University from 1863 to 1887.
