Mary Henrietta Kingsley (1862-1900), English explorer and naturalist. Her father, George Henry Kingsley, travelled widely, studying the rituals and rites of native peoples. On his death in 1892, and her mother's death just six weeks later, Mary resolved to travel to western Africa herself. She departed in 1893, and collected many specimens of fish, reptiles, insects and plants for the British Museum. She also studied the culture of the Fens people. She wore formal Victorian dress throughout her journeys, and described her adventures with dry understatement in Travels in West Africa (1897). She died of enteric fever while treating Boer War casualties in South Africa.
