Astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell (born 1913), photographed in the control room of the radio observatory which he founded & made famous at Jodrell Bank, near Manchester, England. Visible through the window is part of the 250 foot (76 metre) diameter Mark 1A telescope. The world's first giant dish radio telescope, the Mark 1 was commissioned in 1957 after an epic construction effort lasting 6 years. After improvements in 1970/71 it was designated the Mark 1A. Originally a physicist, Lovell worked on cosmic ray studies before World War II, when he helped to develop radar. (Photo taken in May 1987).
