Michael Servetus. Engraving of Spanish physician and theologian, Michael Servetus (1511-1553). In spanish his name is Miguel Serveto. He studied medicine, law and theology in France. Servetus opposed the concept of the holy trinity, a view considered heretical at the time. In his book Christianismi Restitutio (The Restoration of Christianity), he makes mention of his view that blood travels from the heart to the lungs where it is mixed with air and then returns to the heart. He offered no evidence for these accurate ideas, but he had anticipated William Harvey by a quarter of a century. Servetus was burned at the stake in Geneva for his heretical views.
