Allergic conjunctivitis. Inflamed eyelids of a patient with periodic allergic conjunctivitis caused by Angelucci's syndrome. The conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the outer layer of the eyeball, has become red and swollen. Angelucci's syndrome is a condition of hyperexcitability, tachycardia, vasomotor disturbances and conjunctivitis that mainly occurs during the spring (known as vernal conjunctivitis). It is thought to be caused by an allergic reaction and may begin and end suddenly. The eyes become very itchy and the patient is usually photophobic (intolerant to light).
