MODEL RELEASED. MUGA heart scan. Female patient undergoing a MUGA (multiple gated acquisition) heart examination to assess whether her heart can cope with a bone marrow transplant for leukaemia. The patient has been injected with a radioactive element to label her blood. The machine detects the radioactivity, allowing it to follow the blood passing through the patient's heart. This allows an assessment of the heart's health. The leads are for electrodes that simultaneously monitor the electrical activity of the heart. Leukaemia, blood cancer, is the excessive production of leucocytes (white blood cells). Treatment involves regular blood transfusions, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
