Adrenal gland. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of the cellular structure of the zona reticularis region of the adrenal gland. The zona reticularis is the inner zone of the adrenal cortex. It consists of an irregular network of branching cords of glandular cells (grey) with wide intercellular spaces called sinusoids. The cells have microvilli (hair-like) extensions; it is thought these cells secrete sex hormones & may store hormones produced in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal gland.
