Passive solar heating. School building designed to be heated directly by the sun's rays (passive solar heating). The south-facing facade consisted of two glass walls with a 600mm gap between them. The air in the gap was heated by the sun, and the heat was transferred to the rest of the building by convection. The level of heating was controlled by reversible panels on the inner wall, with one side black (to absorb heat) and one side of polished metal (to reflect heat). The inner wall was translucent to reduce glare. This building was St. George's School, Wallasey, Chesire, UK. The architect was Emslie Morgan. It was built in 1961 and has since been demolished.
