VLT Survey Telescope construction. Engineer using a circular saw during the construction of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). This is the supporting structure for the main mirror, which is 2.5 metres wide. The VST is a wide-field telescope that will be used to select suitable targets for the VLT (Very Large Telescope) in Chile. The VST is being designed and constructed by the Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC), Naples, Italy. The VST is scheduled to begin operating at the VLT site in Chile in 2005.
