Vesuvius erupting. 18th-century artwork, from Naples Harbour, of Vesuvius erupting on the night of 15 June 1794. This was an effusive-explosive eruption, and included the opening of lateral vents on the volcano's south-western flank from a height of 470 metres above sea level. This was a major eruption, with a lava flow to the sea destroying the centre of the city of Torre del Greco. At least 18 people were killed. Artwork from volume III of 'Description of Europe' (1794).
