Joseph Fayrer (1824-1907), British physician. Fayrer initially studied engineering, turning to medicine in 1844. He joined the Indian Medical Service of Bengal in 1850 as an assistant surgeon, and rose to the position of professor of surgery at the Medical College of Calcutta. Fayrer wrote on medicine, epidemiology and zoology in India. His research on venomous Indian snakes was published in 'Thanatophidia of India' (1872). Fayrer was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1877, and was created a baronet in 1896. In 1901, he was appointed Physician Extraordinary to King Edward VII.
