Military blood transfusion. US Army soldier receiving a transfusion of blood plasma while recovering from being wounded by a sniper's bullet at Safi, Morocco, during World War II. The bullet grazed his skull and blood plasma was applied at the time by a battlefield medic. Newly developed blood donor and transfusion technologies were used by the US military in World War II. Blood plasma was obtained from donations made through the American Red Cross. Here, First Lieutenant Landis D. Morris, of Olar, South Carolina, is in the Walter Reed General Hospital (later the Walter Reed Army Medical Center), Washington DC, USA. Photographed in March 1943.
