John Ruskin and Henry Acland. British art critic John Ruskin (left, 1819-1900) looking at a book or album with British physician Sir Henry Wentworth Dyke Acland (right, 1815-1900). The two had been friends since they were undergraduates at Oxford University in the 1830s. Ruskin was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford from 1869 to 1879, and again from 1883 to 1884. Acland was Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1858 to 1894. Photographed on 1 August 1893 by Acland's daughter Sarah Angelina Acland (1849-1930), in the grounds of Brantwood, Ruskin's main home from 1872, overlooking Coniston Water in the Lake District, Cumbria, UK.
