Urethral dilators. These silver and ivory instruments date from about 1830 and originate in England. The urethra (the tube through which urine passes out of the bladder) may become constricted due to infection, scarring or injury. Urethral dilators were designed to be temporarily inserted into the urethra to widen the narrowed tube. The instruments seen here consisted of two grooved blades, fixed in a divided handle, through which graduated rods could be passed to dilate the stricture.
