Plaque by J.F Moore commemorating Sir William Baker (1705-1770), a leading City of London merchant trading with American colonies, including New York, the Carolinas and Georgia, where he owned land. As an MP he advised the government on American affairs. He was chairman of the East India Co. and Governor of the Hudson's Bay Co. The supposed justice and prosperity brought to the world by Britain's system of political economy (Adam Smith's ?渕ercantilism??) is implied by the Latin inscription ?淗appiness of the World??and the two classical female figures, one with the scales of justice, the other a cornucopia. A beaver, held by a boy, stands for Canada. A figure with a pack-laden camel suggests textiles and spices from India imported to Britain and then exported to North America and the Continent. However, the American War of Independence and the Industrial Revolution were imminent.
