MDF boards. MDF (medium density fibreboard) is a cheaper and in some cases stronger alternative to natural wood. It is made from broken down wood fibres that are reformed into panels along with resins that bind the fibres together. It slowly releases urea-formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, into the air. Wood dust released when cutting this product is also known to be a respiratory irritant.
