Paper chromatography. Coloured streaks left by different colour inks in a paper chromatography experiment. Coloured inks were used to make coloured spots on filter paper. The end of the filter paper was then dipped into water. As the water diffused upwards, it carried various component dye molecules along with it. The higher the solubility of the molecule in water, the further up the paper it travels.
