Walrus rear flipper. Close-up of a rear flipper of an Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus). This marine mammal uses its rear (hind) flippers for propulsion when swimming, and uses them together with its front flippers for walking when on ice or land. The skin on the flippers is thick, giving good traction. The rear flippers have five digits, each with a claw. In contrast with the smaller and squarer front flippers (used for steering, see C026/2360), the rear flippers are longer and triangular in shape. Photographed in spring in Greenland.
