JOHN CHAMPE (1752-1798). Sergeant major in the Continental Army. 'Escape of Sergeant Champe' from an American patrol, in order to fake his desertion and so begin an assignment as a double agent in an attempt to capture Benedict Arnold, October 1780. The British soldiers in the boat are firing at his pursuers. Wood engraving, American, 19th century.
