Gall midge (Mikiola fagi) galls on beech (Fagus sp.) tree, computer illustration. Gall midges lay their eggs inside the tree's leaves. When they hatch, the larvae (centre) secrete chemicals that cause the leaf's tissue to form a protective 'bubble' (gall, white, right) around them.
