VLT and laser guide under stars. One of the four telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) shining a laser guide at the Paranal Observatory, Atacama desert, Chile. This beam creates a guide star in the atmosphere, which is used to calibrate the telescope to remove the effects of the atmosphere on observations, a process known as adaptive optics.
