Many glaciers descend from the oraefajokull volcanic complex in Southern Iceland. This massive stratovolcano is the highest in Iceland, reaching 2110 metres above sea level at the summit called Hvannadalshnukur. oraefajokull erupted twice in historical times, in 1362 and 1727-28, ejecting large amounts of tephra and causing so-called jokulhlaups or lahars (glacier floods induced by volcanic heat).
