Les Halles at night. The scene at the bar in the world famous cafe Au Pied de Cochon with its nightly heady mix of regulars, night owls and revellers who mingled with the workers, bloodstained butchers and meat porters of Les Halles. Revellers would have a drink standing at the bar absorbing the atmosphere. A well-known character, Roger le Portugais, the strongest of the Forts des Halles, is at the bar wearing a dark blue work shirt and apron. The Meat Pavilion was across the road. Revellers would seek entertainment in Les Halles. Part of their celebration was enjoying the chaotic scene of Les Halles at night, and cafes would be open twenty-four hours a day for the night as well as day trade. People would come out of the myriad entertainments that Paris had to offer, the theatre, shows, cinema, ballet when they would go off to Les Halles to eat and drink at the end of a night out. On the walls are cartoon drawings of pigs including a drawing of a pig carrying a trident with a banner with the famous cafe motto "Tous les chemins menent au Pied de Cochon" - All roads lead to the Pig's Foot. Rue Coquilliere, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
