The two lobes at top are the opened end of the proboscis, which widens the surface area of the fly's mouth. The system of fine canals that line these lobes are called pseudotracheae. These absorb the fermenting juices of the rotting fruit this fly feeds on. This specimen is a Drosophila suzukii fruit fly, a pest of fruit crops and a serious economic threat to soft summer fruit. Females infest thin-skinned fruits before harvest and the larvae destroy the fruit pulp by feeding on them. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
